‘Tis the Season to Not Job Search

It’s easy to get caught up in the preparation of the holiday season and use it as an excuse for putting off your job search.  We convince ourselves, as we approach the end of the year, that there is little chance of finding a job now--might as well wait until after the holidays are over--next year will be soon enough.

However, there are many great reasons to continue your job search in the month of December:

  • The holiday season creates many temporary employment positions that may assist your financial situation and get you out there networking and meeting people--who just might lead you to a permanent employment situation.

  • A temporary employment situation may turn into permanent employment, even if that was not the direction it was intended to go--take each day as it comes you never know what may happen.

  • Employers may need extra assistance at this time of year and be too busy to advertise or interview--you may be job searching or networking and walk right into an employment opportunity.

  • Employers and people in general, start feeling the spirit of the season—HAPPY--and may be in an unusually good mood.  Cold calling, interviewing, and job searching may be a little more relaxed--so if you’re nervous doing these job search musts--you might find this time of year a good time to get out there and start looking.

  • Now is a good time to set some goals for yourself in regards to job searching, knowing you can take some “me” time as a reward for your efforts to be with family and/or friends over the holidays.

  • As well, take time to share with family and friends when they ask that inevitable question, “how’s the job search going, are you working yet?”  Take time to tell them about the great interview you had, or the recent job posting you’re waiting to hear back on.

Positive thinking can also be an asset to your job search success.  I highly believe that negative thinking and self talk usually leads to negative job search results and can sabotage your efforts.   In order to beat feelings of rejection and maintain a good self image, hang out with people who are positive and support you.  Who would be better morale boosters than your family and friends?

Do make a list of places that could possibly use seasonal help if you need that survival job. And, continue to network and seek employment, both in your survival job, and your dream job throughout the weeks leading up to the holidays.  Each day, tell yourself that there is an employer--for you--who needs your specific expertise and sincerely make an effort to find them.

Most of all, believe in yourself so that others can believe in you too.
